The Program

Crawford House offers an intensive, comprehensive and highly individualized six-month treatment program. In addition to counseling, educational classes and employment readiness services, the program also emphasizes gaining experience in life skills management, such as budgeting, parenting, nutrition and stress management. Residents learn new, beneficial behaviors and healthy ways of coping.

While the program is free to residents upon admission, clients must obtain part-time employment after an orientation period.They then contribute a portion of their net salary to help pay for their own treatment.Obtaining employment is emphasized to foster self-worth, economic independence and personal responsibility while becoming sober members of the community.

Crawford House can accommodate up to 22 women at any one time, and serves over 100 women annually. All residents are educated about the disease of addiction and begin working towards their personal treatment goals from the day they arrive.Residents' progress is measured by successful completion of successive 30-day treatment plans.

Women are referred to Crawford House by rehabilitation centers, physicians, the Drug Court Initiative, the legal system and the New Jersey Substance Abuse Initiative. Crawford House also receives referrals from contracts through the counties of Mercer, Middlesex and Somerset. Women may also self-refer.

Crawford House employs four part-time and five full-time staff. The Board of Trustees plays an active role in the governance of the agency. IIn addition, volunteers from businesses, churches and schools in the local community perform various duties such as shopping, office help, vehicle maintenance and driving residents to appointments.

Residents transition from Crawford House upon completion of all treatment goals. Of the women who transitioned in 2013, 93 percent have remained in recovery and at least 86 percent of the women who transitioned to independent living from Crawford House during the last three years have done so as well.

Crawford House is licensed and inspected by the NJ Department of Human Services and monitored by the Mercer, Middlesex and Somerset Counties' Departments of Human Services.

Upon Graduation from Crawford House:

• 100% of residents have completed their personal treatment goals
• 100% of residents are employed
• 80% of graduates during the last four years have remained substance free to date

The Crawford House program serves female residents of New Jersey, age 18 and older, who have been assessed with alcohol and/or drug addiction. In order to be eligible for the program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• They must recognize that their primary problem is alcohol and/or drug addiction and demonstrate a familiarity with the disease concept of addiction;
• They must be free of substance use for at least 14 days;
• They must be free of communicable disease (Tuberculosis);
• They should not be experiencing any emotional or behavioral conditions that require medical monitoring. Women will be accepted who are on certain medications.
• They must be employable;
• They must be homeless and indigent.

Referral Guidelines
Referrals to Crawford House are accepted from medically monitored and managed in-patient programs, intensive outpatient treatment programs, or other supervised, structured settings. Women may also self-refer.

If the initial admission criteria are met after the telephone screening, an in person interview will be arranged.
