Somerset Hills Learning Institute

Founded in 1998, Somerset Hills Learning Institute is a private non-profit program that offers a broad spectrum of services to children, adolescents, and adults with autism. The Institute is a dissemination site of the Princeton Child Development Institute and exists to provide science-based treatment and education to people with autism. Somerset Hills Learning Institute prepares professionals as future autism intervention resources in New Jersey, and through its research, pioneer comprehensive intervention models that may be used nationally and internationally for the benefit of people with autism.

Highlights of our program:

  • 1:1 personalized instruction Staff and parents become the teachers the children need them to be because instructional materials and procedures are carefully created for each child and their effects on learning evaluated. The process of creating and evaluating is continuous and overtime results in a personalized response to students’ needs that produces learning and mastery of skills.
  • Hands-on supervision continuous throughout employment ensures consistent, high quality education, every day, for every child with a 1:5 staff trainer to teacher ratio.
  • Individualized instructional programs bring IEP objectives to life by operating from the peer-reviewed Applied Behavior Analytic literature and student performance data to create the most effective teaching methods for each student.
  • Parent instruction With students spending 82% of a week at home, and the fact that children with autism don’t generalize their skills readily, parents must become the teachers their children need them to be. Our home programming services are designed to achieve that goal.
  • Home programming Frequent home visits (on average 4-5 per month) by teachers to coach and mentor parents promotes the generalization of children’s skills home and community settings and fosters meaningful inclusion.
  • Transition program Preparation and follow-up services for successfully integrating children into traditional education settings.
  • Job & life-skills training Preparation and support for successful transition to the work force and increasingly independent living.
  • Professional development We provide training opportunities for professionals to improve autism treatment in their communities, including a relationship with Caldwell University’s Applied Behavior Analysis Masters and Ph.D. programs. Currently, 26% of our clinical staff are pursuing or have successfully completed advanced degrees in Applied Behavior Analysis through this relationship.
  • Research Dr. Brothers and staff members conduct research on a broad spectrum of topics including Prompts and Prompt Fading, Joint Attending, Digital Technology for Teaching, and Weight Management, to name a few. Staff have been invited to present at, and participate in, conferences dedicated to best practices in autism treatment.
