In collaboration with our partners, Somerset Community Action Program will increase the self-sufficiency of low-moderate income individuals and families in the Somerset County Community by empowering them through education, employment training, cultural enrichment, case management, and life skills development programs. SCAP focuses its’ efforts on assisting families reach their full potential by providing them with supportive services designed to assist them with reaching a healthy level of self-reliance. In addition to being a licensed child care center, SCAP is also Somerset County’s designated Community Action Program and is funded to provide anti-poverty activities driven by a community assessment of needs.
Somerset Community Action Program, Inc. (SCAP) was established in 1965 as one of the first few community action programs nationwide set to implement the Economic Opportunities Act. From its inception, the leadership of SCAP was motivated by progressivism with a strong commitment to community participation in the decision-making process and in shaping the programs and institutions that were set up to serve them.
SERVICES & PROGRAMS:
Child Development Services:
The Somerset Community Action Program (SCAP) offers low cost/ high quality childcare for children ages 6 weeks through when the child is age eligible for Kindergarten. SCAP has an infant/toddler program for children from 6 weeks to 3 years of age, and a preschool program for children 3 to 5 years of age. Our childcare program operates from 6:30am to 6:30pm Monday to Friday. Children must have all required vaccinations for admittance into our program, as well as receive an annual physical. SCAP provides the children breakfast, lunch and snack daily at no cost to the family. SCAP has implemented the Grow New Jersey Curriculum. With this Curriculum, SCAP is provided with a foundation that provides supports to the educational processes in the center. These areas include: A. Safe, Healthy Learning Environment B. Curriculum and Learning Environment C. Family and Community Engagement D. Workforce/Professional Development E. Administration and Management.
SCAP’s efforts are to make a graduate of our program’s transition to Kindergarten a social one; not a social and academic one. We accept all Community Child Care Solutions subsidies inclusive of Work First New Jersey (WFNJ) and New Jersey Cares for Kids (NJCFK.)
- We welcome children from ages 6 weeks through 5 years old
- Our Tuition Rates for New Enrolleees is $175.00 per week
- Registration fee is $45.00 per program per child
- Weekly tuition includes a healthy breakfast, lunch and snack served daily
Office of Community Assistance Programs:
- Driver’s License Restoration: Offers one time financial assistance to NJ Motorists who have had their driving privileges suspended due to outstanding surcharges, fines and child support obligations.
- Case Management for Emergency Needs: Emergency utility, rental, food, clothing and furniture assistance
- Early Childhood Education and Training Program: 5 month on the job training program for those interested in pursuing a career in the Early Childhood Education fields
- Financial Literacy: Ongoing education workshops designed to help low-income individuals become banked and increase assets.
- First Time Homebuyers Club: Offers counseling, education and a down payment assistance program.
