This course builds on the principles of Introduction to Positive Behavior Supports, as outlined in the foundations course. In many cases, people who engage in persistent patterns of problem behaviors demonstrate complex behaviors with many underlying causes. This training will assist participants in learning to conduct a team-based, multi-component, Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) to systematically assess these behaviors and identify the underlying function or motivation. The second phase of the training will illustrate how to use this information to develop effective intervention plans to address ongoing behavior and mental health needs and support quality of life.
Note:This training currently is ONLY open to employees of New Jersey DDD, DDD/Medicaid Approved Providers, and individuals with disabilities and family members.
To meet the training needs of the entire state, there is a limit of participants per agency for this training.

Research has demonstrated a high rate of co-occurring Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and anxiety disorders. A variety of clinical and behavior support strategies have been developed based on the traditional theories of social/emotional development within ASD. This session will provide an overview of recent brain research that has discovered a pattern of brain waves associated with anxiety, that are triggered by classic social demands, such as making eye contact. Based on this review, potential changes in the manner of clinical intervention that should be considered, along with behavior modification and support strategies will be discussed.

When challenging behavior escalates to dangerous levels of aggression or self-injury, it often becomes necessary for supporters to engage in intensive interaction with the individual. In extreme cases, this may result in the use of “hands-on” or personal control techniques to preserve health and safety. This webinar will address strategies to avoid escalation, in order to reduce the need to use these extreme interventions. In addition to this, techniques will presented for managing interactions with the individual during and following a crisis intervention that are designed to reduce the likelihood that the individual will learn these problem behaviors are a good way to get a reaction from those that support them.

This webinar will illustrate the benefits of conducting a comprehensive Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) by following the case history of a person with long-term behavior problems. This case illustration will walk participants through a situation in which on-going behavior problems had not been resolved by existing behavior support plans, resulting in the need for further assessment and analysis. The implications of mental illness on behavior will be discussed as a critical point of consideration. An overview of the FBA process emphasizing the role of setting events will be provided, and the case history will show how this supports more effective intervention planning and implementation, leading to better outcomes and quality of life for people with IDD.

This webinar will use a case study to illustrate the need to address a variety of factors, in addition to the primary function of the behavior, to achieve a significant reduction in the frequency of problem behavior. Strategies to develop and implement a behavior plan based on the functional hypothesis, components of the individual assessment, and incorporation of additional support needs will be reviewed. The outcomes for this case illustration will show how including supports related to personal well-being and addressing mental-health needs can improve quality of life and reduce the frequency of problem behaviors.

Participants will learn to incorporate CBI into their instructional routine as a complement to the in-school instruction provided. In-school instruction alone is often insufficient for teaching students with disabilities who need additional opportunities to practice and apply skills in meaningful experiences. Functional skills reliant on the application of academic knowledge and social skills are best taught through systematic instruction in naturally occurring community environments (traditional or virtual) that provide students with authentic and rewarding learning opportunities. This training includes strategies and techniques for using systematic instruction in the classroom and community, as well as prompting systems, data collection strategies, incorporating technology, reinforcement considerations, and planning for maintenance and generalization.
Note: This series is ONLY open to individual school staff who are new to CBI practices and are employed in a district that has been previously trained and has an established CBI implementation team.

Business advisory committees are not a new concept, they have been used in community-based employment programs for decades. A well-constructed business advisory committee with a clear mission can make job development easier. Developing job opportunities for individuals with disabilities requires making connections with employers and developing strategies to create and expand community links. Starting and maintaining a business advisory committee often takes a backseat to the more pressing needs of day-to-day agency and program operations. Using a number of knowledgeable resources, we will discuss a framework for developing an effective and productive business advisory committee and how to keep it going.

Financial literacy and money management training is a critical component that is often missing from job preparation for individuals with disabilities. Earning a living through employment is often cited as the road to independence, but proper management of those earnings is how we access our needs, wants, items, and opportunities. This supplemental will focus on the foundational elements of financial literacy, including: assessing money values, creating person-centered monetary goals, conservative budgeting, retirement plans, Social Security benefits considerations, and more. Participants will leave the session with increased knowledge of financial literacy and many ways to disseminate these topics to the individuals they serve, regardless of academic level.

Many adults and young adults with disabilities employed today find themselves in jobs they are struggling to maintain over time. Often that struggle is because the job isn’t a good match for the employee’s skills, abilities, attributes and/or interests. While most adults and young adults without disabilities have had the opportunity to inform their employment and career preferences through a variety of formal and informal work experiences in different settings, this is typically not so for their peers with disabilities. Job seekers with disabilities who have limited work experience to draw from are at a disadvantage when expected to identify employment goals. In this training, participants will learn what situational assessments are and how they can be a valuable tool for job seekers and their community employment staff. Participants will receive the Situational Tool for Exploring Possibilities (STEP) and explore how its use can assist job seekers in identifying the type of job or career they want and how well their skills, abilities, attributes, and interests match it.

For some time now expectations for service delivery have been changing within our state to continue to mirror national trends and consumer preferences. Through this training professionals working in day services will develop a better understanding of what is driving the change in service expectations, such as the HCBS Settings Rule, and the role of the direct support professional in implementing these changes. Trainees will explore how the services they provide should be defined by the provision of quality experiences that lead to more fulfilling lives for those receiving services and prioritizes inclusion in community life. The training is designed to encourage day staff to think creatively about services, support strategies, advocacy and the development of community capacity.
Prevocational Training Services participants will discuss the description of Prevocational Training services as defined in the NJDDD Supports Program Manual. Support Coordinators play an important role in the lives of people with developmental disabilities and their families. They are professionals that help to identify the supports the person needs, plan for the life the person wants, and connect the person to services that will help him/her achieve a quality life in the community. In order to do this support coordinators need to have a working knowledge of the disability system and current models of support, be skilled in person-centered planning, be able to identify a wide array of available community services options, and effectively monitor the quality and effectiveness of supports on an ongoing basis.
As a part of the required support coordination orientation, this two-day training will introduce participants to current disability philosophy, best practices, and the roles of a support coordinator. Through a series of engaging activities participants will learn how to develop the person centered planning tool and NJ Individual Service Plan. Strategies to develop personally defined outcomes and goals will be practiced, and concepts related to connecting the person to community-based supports and services will be presented.
