The Division of Medical Assistance and Health Services (DMAHS) administers the state-and federally- funded Medicaid program for certain groups of low to moderate income people. Through these programs, DMAHS serves more than 1,000,000 people. Its staff of over 500 works both in Trenton and in Medical Assistance Customer Centers (MACCs) throughout the state. The MACCs assist Medicaid clients in obtaining needed services and in answering questions regarding their benefit packages.

The Division of Medical Assistance and Health Services (DMAHS) administers Medicaid’s state-and federally- funded NJ FamilyCare programs for certain groups of low- to moderate- income adults and children. Through these programs, DMAHS serves approximately 1.7 million. or nearly 20%, of New Jersey’s residents.

Specifically, NJ FamilyCare provides health coverage to children, pregnant women, parents/caretaker relatives, single adults, childless couples, the aged, blind, disabled, and individuals qualified for long-term care services. NJ FamilyCare’s comprehensive health coverage program provides a wide-range of services including: doctor visits, hospital services, prescriptions, tests, vision care, mental health care, dental, nursing home care and other healthcare services, depending on the person’s eligibility category.

Most NJ FamilyCare beneficiaries are enrolled in managed care. With managed care, a health plan (also known as an HMO) coordinates an individual’s health care needs.
